Imagine a crisp winter evening in January under the stars, surrounded by tropical plants and submerged in a steaming body of water in the middle of a subtropical island. You are luxuriously relaxing in one of the many hot springs of São Miguel, Azores, and life is good. As unusual of a destination that this might be in the dead of winter, trust me, this is where you want to be.

Weather and Atmosphere

Although the winter months in São Miguel are the coldest and rainiest of the year, they are also the most peaceful and intimate time to visit. The mild subtropical climate of the Azores, with average temperatures ranging from 14–18°C (57–64°F), makes it a comfortable winter destination. It is also a rare glimpse at authentic life here without the tourist crowds.

Despite some cloudy days, the flora stays green and vibrant year-round and the fumaroles continue their perpetual fuming keeping the mystical charm alive. Even during a downpour, it is a lovely poetic winter destination to experience cozy misty mornings, dramatic waves along the coast, and the soothing sound of rain against volcanic rocks.

What to Do

At any part of the year, this island remains one of the best places for nature lovers and adventure seekers—in fact, it was dubbed so by the World Travel Awards for the past two consecutive years. The numerous hiking trails can sometimes be more enjoyable with the cooler temperatures keeping you fresh along the path. Even under a scarce light rain the moodiness of a misty verdant forest can make you want to take out your camera or pen and paper and capture nature in all its glory.

If walking is not your thing, São Miguel has plenty of natural hot springs resorts to repose in. One of my favorites for a relax-explore combination is Terra Nostra. They have a massive basin of warm ochre mineral water with temperatures around 38–40°C (100–104°F). Before dipping in, you can walk around the botanical gardens surrounding this place. Another favorite, specifically for a night dip, is Dona Beija. It is open during the evening and what a delight it is to bathe under the stars.

Food and Cozy Experiences

Traditional Azorean cuisine is full of warming comfort foods for the fresher days of winter. The famous cozido das Furnas (a mix of meats, vegetables, and seasonings) is a culinary ode to the volcanic origins of the island, cooked underground using natural geothermal heat. Azorean octopus stew is a delicious option to try for seafood lovers. And for a fluffy soul-warming snack, their delicious bolo levedo will certainly hit the spot—especially fresh out of the pan. Tea lovers will be pleased to know that this island is the only place in Europe where green and black tea are grown. Enjoy a cup along with a tour at the Gorreana tea plantation and factory.

Practical Tips for Winter Travel

Flights and Accommodation:
Because winter is the off-season, you will easily find accommodations offering lower prices and more availability. Flights to the island will also be significantly cheaper at this time.
Packing Tips:
If you are coming here to explore, remember to pack some waterproof gear, warm layers, and sturdy shoes. Don’t forget your swimwear.
Getting Around:
Unfortunately, public transportation on this island is still very lacking so it is recommended to get a rental cars or sign up for guided tours to reach less accessible locations.

Conclusion

Maybe this winter you skip the usual all-inclusive beach resort and instead venture to this unpretentious yet enchanting island for an unconventional winter vacation. With its magnificent natural wonders and intimate experiences that only come with the season, you will feel like you discovered a side of São Miguel that was just waiting to welcome you.
